And then there is always the option to drive from city to city. The main arterial roads in South Africa are generally good and, other than at peak holiday periods, the traffic on the roads is not too heavy. But beware. The distances in South Africa are great so it may well take you longer to get to your destination than you ever expected.

A trip from Johannesburg to Durban takes some six hours, while Cape Town is about 1,400 km (870 miles) from the Johannesburg area, so it is wise to break the journey overnight unless you have someone to share the driving with.

I firmly advise you to stick to the speed limit of 120 km per hour (75 miles per hour) on the open roads, unless otherwise indicated, and 60 km per hour (37 miles per hour) in urban areas. Speeding fines are heavy and an unnecessary evil. Furthermore, it is not safe to drive fast here, even if some of the open roads and toll roads look like they are good for some low flying. Far too many drivers drive selfishly and dangerously, leading to us having one of the highest road death tolls in the world. Some of this high death rate is also the fault of pedestrians who don’t think and just wander into and across roads or people who are inebriated. It is far better to be too cautious than to become a statistic.
